NaBloPoMo Day 8: Breathless

Goon Squad Sarah and I are both obsessed with the Twilight series.

Yes, I admit it. I made fun of numerous people for it, and now I'm totally having to eat crow, but 14-year-old me would never have had a boyfriend if I'd read Twilight, because I'd be out looking for Edward Cullen. No one else would have measured up.

And now there's a movie. A movie! I don't care how much fun Dan makes of me, I am so there.

The actor who plays Edward is named Robert Pattinson. He played Cedric Diggory, who met an unfortunate end in "Harry Potter and Appallingly Bad Movie." That's not really what it's called, but I've blocked it out of my head because the movie was so bad. Also, I don't feel like walking across the room to see what the movie was. You know which movie it was.

Something is wrong with my internet and I can't upload pictures to Blogger for some reason, but you can do a google image search for him. He's hot. Just trust me.

Anyway, this is what he recently said about kissing in an interview with USA Today:

"I always get carried away when I'm kissing people. I just go nuts."

Thanks for that, Robert. No, really. Thank you.

NaBloPoMo Day 6: Five Adjectives

One of my favorite books of all time is Nora Ephron's great novel Heartburn. I've written about it before, because I love the story and I love the story of the story and I love the food in the story. Nora Ephron was married to Carl Bernstein of Woodward and Bernstein, and he had an affair with an absolutely wretched woman, a Washington D.C. socialite. It must have been devastating to her, and it all comes out in Heartburn.

In one wonderful scene (I can't remember if it's in the book or in the movie, or both) there is a scene where the characters play a game where they choose five words or short phrases to describe themself. I love this little exercise. It is more illuminating than a three-hour-long conversation, sometimes, when it comes to finding out who someone really is.

One character says that he is:

Jewish.
Married.
Lawyer.
Father.
Hungry.

See what I mean? That character's wife says that she is:

Unemployed.
Mother.
Good-natured.
Shiksa.
Sister.

The main character's list:

Pregnant.
Wife.
Mother.
Writer.
Happy.

Here's my list. Leave me yours in the comments.

Mother.
Partner.
Friend.
Creative.
Adjusting.

NaBloPoMo Day 25: Choking Down My Vegetables

We just watched "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" on Encore. I had forgotten how smart and funny and good that movie is. I do love the Coen Brothers, as misanthropic as they are sometimes. It makes me want to go see "No Country for Old Men," and not just because Javier Bardem has those eyes. You know.

It's just Cormac McCarthy that I'm not crazy about. I read "All the Pretty Horses" and it was like eating my lima beans: not at all to my liking, but I'm aware that it was very popular and stylish and all the cool kids were eating lima beans at the time. But oh Madonna Penn Ritchie, the book had no quotation marks! I freakin' hate that! I actually started putting them into the book with a pen as I read, just because it was unbearable. No quotation marks!

Well, fuck 'em if they can't take a joke is what I always say. I just can't stomach what doesn't appeal. The movie Lost In Translation was excruciating for me--just genuinely awful, despite the wonderful acting and the critical success. I feel like Elaine on Seinfeld, when she admitted that she hated The English Patient. Am I remembering that right? Jerry made out with a girl during Schindler's List...I don't know. Maybe I'm imagining all of that.

Do you have one of those books or movies that people insisted you had to read, and you found distateful, uninteresting, badly-crafted, against all other popular reviews?

What's Got Two Thumbs And Doesn't Give A Crap? Molly.

So, Dumbledore is gay.

So is Barney Frank, Oscar Wilde, and Melissa Ethridge, and they all do things that I think are really good, so the only thing I'm losing any sleep over is the fact that the National Organization of Ignorant Tightasses will probably use this as an excuse to burn (figuratively if not literally) books while simultaneously fighting to overturn Roe v. Wade, despite a study being released last week which says that legalizing abortion doesn't make it any more prevalent, just safer, and modernizing the death penalty, although we're one of four countries in the world that practices capital punishment on citizens convicted as minors. The other countries: Iran, Syria, North Korea. Definitely a list we want to be on.

Gee whiz, I'm thrilled with the state of American politics this week.
